More on Good Cereal

If your child is stuck on a sugary cereal and you fear how the change will go down, your best bet is to transition them gradually.

First step of transitioning: Mix their favorite sugary cereal with a whole grain cereal. Start with a small amount of the whole grain cereal and increase the amount until the ratio changes and the sugary cereal is just a topping.

How can you help the transition? In addition to upgrading the cereal (graudally or at once), you can help the process of slowly changing out of the sugary habit by remembering to offer a serving of somthing fresh with it. Add fresh fruit of any kind or cinnamon and almonds to top the cereal. Even if your child takes only one bite, their breakfast just became more nutritious.

How else can you use the transitioning method? You can do this with flavored sugary yogurts as well. Mix in plain yogurt and fresh fruit until they enjoy the taste of the non-sugar kind.
